by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 A.D, preserving it forever
exactly how it was when the eruption occurred. Your private
local licensed Pompeii guide will take you on a fascinating
tour through this once thriving empire of nearly 20,000
inhabitants that was completely covered in 30 feet of
volcanic ash. Take in the baths, villas, theatres and

Pompeii, historical town, is one of the most famous
archaeological site of the whole Italy. Its ruins are part
of an ancient Roman city destroyed and buried by the
eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D.. For 1500 years
it has been covered by heaps of ashes until 1748, when
excavations were started.
The city, with its elliptical plan, was divided by streets
that intersecting themselves formed a net-shape. Now, it’s
possible see the Civil Forum, a big rectangular square,
which was the very heart of Pompeii, the temples of Jupiter,
Apollo and Vespasian, an imposing Amphitheatre where more
than 12.000 spectators could attend gladiators shows and
above all it’s possible see the rests of everyday life as it
was almost 2000 years ago: meals and bread just cooked,
young lovers still sleeping and persons trying to find
refuge under the arcades
Today, we find well conserved wooden objects, furniture,
allowing us to record customs, traditions, and art from a
Roman era. Many of the
artefacts now are housed in the National Archaeological
Museum in Naples, others in the local
Antiquarium.
HERCULANEUM EXCURSION
Herculaneum is an ancient town lying 5 miles (8 Km) southest
of Naples, on the western slopes of Mount Vesuvius, founded,
according to legend, by the mythical Hercules (the greek
Herakles).
It is of Greek origins, as the place name itself indicates
(from the greek
Herakleion,
latin Herculaneum) and the town plan,
very similar to the near
Neapolis.
It was destroyed and buried in ashes, together with Pompeii,
by the eruption of the volcano Vesuvius in 79 A.D., and
nowadays, Herculaneum is an important archaeological site.
Excavations began by accident in 1709 when some workers
discovered a wall which was later found to be one of the
stages of an ancient theatre.
is an ancient residential town of Greek origins, a smaller
town with a wealthier population at the time of the
eruption. Covered by a torrent of mud rather than ash, the
ruins are in some ways even better-preserved, and the site
offers a variety of beautiful scenery and invaluable arts.
Embark on a walking tour through the villas with portico
gardens, fountains and baths, and admire the wall frescoes
and floor mosaics. Excavations of Herculaneum began by
accident in 1709 when some workers, digging a well,
discovered a wall which was later found to be one of the
stages of the ancient theatre. Later, there were many human
skeletons uncovered at the ancient shoreline, suggesting
that numerous inhabitants attempted to escape but perished
when mountains collapsed and volcanic gases were released.

Ancient town of the Magna Grecia, near Salerno, it was
probably founded, around 650 b.C., by a large group of
Dorians who had been expelled from the city of Sybaris. The
Dorians named their new colony Poseidonia, later called
Paistom by Lucanians, local barbarians.
In 273 b.C., the Romans arrived who changed the city's name,
Paestum. Now it is one of the most famous archaeological
sites almost entirely composed within the enclosing walls of
the antique Greek colony with four big gates. Inside the
town there are the Temple of Hera, dating back to 550 b.C.,
with nine columns on the short sides and eighteen on the
long ones and remains of the decoration of the architrave;
the Temple of Poseidon, built in 450 b.C., imposing and
harmonious, formed by a base with three steps on which stand
six columns on the short sides and fourteen on the long
ones.
The columns are all nine meters high and are united, on top,
by an architrave supporting a sloping roof ending both on
the front and in the back with two pediments; the Temple of
Cerere of 500 b.C., with six columns on the short sides and
thirteen on the long ones. Other important architectural
remains are: the Forum, some urban quarters, and largely the
remains of religious buildings from which come many metopes,
now kept at the Museum of Paestum.
SORRENTO EXCURSION
A little town near Naples, overlooking the sea. Its
historical centre, surrounded by the ancient town walls, is
typical of a Roman city with streets that intersecting
themselves formed a net-shape. The historic streets, filled
today with vibrant shops selling various goods, form
interesting artistic routes winding along churches and
ancient buildings.
Here it’s possible see the Dome, the Church of Saint
Francesco from Assisi with its fourteenth-century monastery
and the Correale of Terranova Museum where Greek and Roman
finds, collection of inlaid wood works, porcelains’
Capodimonte and paintings from the 17th and 19th centuries
are to be found. Along the coast, the Roman ruins of the
Pollio Felice’s Villa are the destination of many tourists
who love swimming in the baths of the Queen Giovanna.
A traditional holiday place, with many hotels dipped in the
silence and surrounded by the greenery of lemons and orange
groves, small parks, gardens and limpid sea… the sea where
mythological mermaids tempted Ulysses with melodious songs.
It’s possible taste home-made cakes, buns, ice-creams in
every bar. Restaurants like “Don Alfonso 1890” in Sant’Agata
sui due Golfi, awarded three stars in the Michelin guide,
offer a very high quality of gastronomy and then… it’s also
possible taste the world neapolitan “pizza” and the famous
“limoncello”.
Sorrento and the Sorrentine Peninsula
Sorrento offers to its visitors a wonderful view over the
gulf of Naples and the isles of Capri, Ischia, and Procida.
The coasts are very irregular, with small hidden creeks and
beaches created because of the erosion by the sea.
For the above Excursion we suggest good walking shoes and
comfortable dress.
